Online Education Eligible For Traditional Scholarships and Grants

Private colleges and universities are known for small class sizes where students receive individual attention. These same institutions tend to offer frequent opportunities for involvement, more study abroad opportunities and boast higher graduation and retention rates, according to the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities. Many also associate a private education with pricey tuition.

While tuition and associated school fees at private colleges and universities are often higher than those at public institutions, scholarships and grants can greatly offset the cost. In fact, financial aid has been increasing and accelerating at private institutions, Bloomberg Businesweek recently reported. Scholarships, grants and other forms of financial aid at private colleges and universities between this coming fall semester and the fall of 2009 increased by 6.8 percent as compared with tuition and fees, which rose by 4.5 percent, according to a June report from the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities.

Private institutions aren't only slowing tuition hikes and enhancing scholarships for campus and distance learning programs. In some instances, they're freezing tuition and offering three-year degree programs, National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities President David L. Warren was quoted in a news release as saying. "Our colleges are redoubling their efforts to keep out of pocket costs as low as possible for students and families...," National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities President David L. Warren was quoted in a news release as saying. "The bottom line for consumers is that they should not rule out a private college just because of the price tag."

The average published tuition and fee at private colleges and universities throughout the country is about $26,273, an amount that after financial aid and federal tax benefits came to $11,870, information from the College Board shows. Even for the 2008-2009 academic year, the average net tuition charge for private college and university students in Wisconsin, after financial aid including loans was considered, was $4,737, a web site for the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities shows. Student loans do have to be repaid, but 71 percent of the $18,478 average freshman financial aid package came in the form of grants that do not, the Wisconsin association reported.

Students and families can check the website for the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities for a list of private institutions that have kept their tuition rates the same as last year. These colleges include the AIB College of Business in Iowa, Culver-Stockton College in Missouri, Fresno Pacific University in California and The Sage Colleges in New York State, according to the site. In Ohio, Ursuline College and the University of Akron have launched three-year bachelor's degree programs, the national association site shows.

Students might also consider saving money that might otherwise be spent on commuting and meal plans, since many private colleges according to a June 2010 report in USA Today have added or are planning to add distance learning options. Some private institutions have seen substantial enrollment increases as a result of new online learning opportunities, the report noted. The USA Today article focused on Christian institutions that an Eduventures consulting group analyst told the reporter have an advantage in the strongly religious United States and a crowded online learning market.

Online college programs themselves offer opportunities to schedule studies between the demands of work and family. Some distance learning programs are entirely online, while others combine time on campus with time online. Scholarships and grants for campus and distance learning programs might be based on financial needs or on instances where students have demonstrated academic success, community involvement, leadership abilities and more.

The Minnesota Private College Fund alone administers an array of scholarships for its 17 member institutions. Students in some instances might have to demonstrate academic success or community involvement and in others might have had to overcome barriers to pursue a degree. The Private College Fund also awards scholarships to students studying specific subjects.

Can I Cover My Education Cost With a Wacky Scholarship?

There are scholarships available for students, though almost all have specific criteria which students must meet in order to qualify. Some require a certain level of academic performance, some are targeted towards athletes, others to students whose parents serve in the military and so on. However, there are some other scholarships out there with much more esoteric criteria -- for example, for left-handed students! Sound strange? It is, but there are many wacky scholarships students may want to look into.

However, many of these scholarships go unclaimed because few students are aware of these less conventional sources of funding. These scholarships are somewhat eccentric in nature, being awarded on the basis of certain hobbies or personal traits. They may be unusual, but these wacky scholarships can be another way to help pay for college.

There is a scholarship offered by the Tall Clubs International. This $1,000 scholarship is available to students who are over 6' 2" in height (or 5' 8" and up for female students). Exceptionally short students aren't left out either - there are also grants awarded to students who are shorter than 4' 10" by the Little People of America and the Billy Barty Foundation.

If you happen to be overweight, the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance may have a scholarship for you as well. The NAAFA awards two scholarships annually to members of the association on a merit basis.

If these wacky scholarships are a source of amazement (or perhaps amusement) to you, there's others you may want to learn about. For example, if you're a Star Trek fan this one in particular may interest you. There is a Kor Memorial Scholarship which is awarded to one student annually (and if you have any idea who Kor is, you're probably a good candidate) by the Klingon Language Institute; and yes, there really is a Klingon Language Institute. The best part is that you don't have to know any Klingon in order to be awarded this $500 scholarship.

These are just a few of the many unusual scholarships which are available to those students who seek them out and meet their unique criteria. There are many others - for instance, there are scholarships for vegans, working artists, caddies, redheads and just about everyone and anyone else.

How to Fund Your Education With College Scholarship Money

Paying for college is a daunting task today. College tuition seems to rise every year. Combine that with family incomes that are stagnant, and tuition costs seem intimidating indeed. Fortunately, there is a solution: Funding your education with college scholarship money can make paying for your higher education a whole lot less stressful.

And today, students and their parents can use as much help as possible to cover college costs. According to College Board, the average cost of a year at a private college now stands at more than $25,000. Public four-year universities are more reasonable, but even they are costly: It costs on average more than $6,500 a year for students attending one of these schools, according to College Board.

You may doubt that there's a college scholarship out there for you. Perhaps you never excelled at any particular sport in high school. Maybe your grades were solid, but not outstanding. Maybe you were never a shining star in music, speech or debate.

Don't panic. The odds are extremely good that there are still many valuable college scholarships for which you can qualify.

That's because today's college scholarships aren't only awarded on the basis of academic or extracurricular excellence. Some organizations award scholarships to incoming college students who devoted a significant amount of time to volunteer efforts. Others pass on scholarships to students who maintained solid grades while working as a caddy at their local golf course. Still others award scholarships to students who are interested in pursuing a career in real estate, theater or law enforcement.

There are even some extremely strange scholarships available. The Klingon Language Institute, for instance, awards a $500 scholarship every year to encourage students to study languages. Klingon, of course, is a language spoken by Capt. Kirk's greatest enemies in Star Trek. Loyola University in Chicago is home to the Zolp scholarship. This can be an easy one to earn depending on your last name: The scholarship is given to Catholic students attending the school who have the last name of "Zolp." There are even scholarships available where the qualification is that you are left-handed!

Many scholarships not based on academic or athletic prowess don't pay quite as much. Some may only provide enough money to cover a student's room and board. But the good news is that students can apply for as many of these relatively unknown scholarships as they like. By picking up scholarship money from several different sources, students can help ease the financial burdens of paying for college.

Remember, scholarships, unlike loans, do not have to be paid back upon graduation. Remember, too, that a lot of scholarship money remains untouched each year simply because no students apply for them. That's why it makes so much sense to think about funding your education with college scholarship money, by completing as many applications for scholarships as you can.

Dealing with the Costs of College Education - A Parent's Predicament

Due to continuous inflation, banks and lending companies are beginning to tighten their standards for loan applications. This may be expected in an economic recession, but the effects brought about by these events are beginning to make a huge impact on American families nowadays, particularly to American parents who are sending their children to college.

American parents usually rely on loans to pay for their kids' college education. However, since lending companies and other student loan boards have started implementing stricter application processing and approval, this makes it more difficult for parents to provide for their children's college needs. Persons with good credit history are more likely to have their loans approved, but the irony is, those in good credit standing have less reason to apply for loans.

In a recent poll conducted by the New York Times/CBS News, nearly 70 percent of the American parents surveyed said that they are "very concerned" with the available options they can take to pay for their children's college education. Only about 6 percent of the parents surveyed were "not concerned" regarding the issue. In response, the Department of Education gave assurances about the availability of federal loans, but the department still has to work things out with for guarantors and lenders to ensure that funds would not run out. Private lending companies, meanwhile, are fast becoming a prime alternative source for loans, but they, too, have increased their lending requirements.

According to the American Student Loan Services, parents borrow an average of $10,000 to pay for their children's initial college needs each academic year. Tuition alone costs roughly about $6,000 in public colleges and around $23,750 in private institutions. Parents usually pay on an installment basis, but this makes only a slight difference, since they also have other educational needs to provide for, such as room and board, computer equipment, living allowance and other miscellaneous fees.

Scholarships and financial aid are now available to help parents meet their children's education needs However, information about scholarship opportunities needs to be publicized more for the benefit of students and their parents. This will help make it easier for struggling American families to deal with the rising costs of higher education.

Education Will Make You Successful

In our society today, people believe in furthering their education in order to become successful. At the same time, everyday more and more young people drop out of school because they feel unmotivated and uninspired to keep on going with their school work. Every student has different problems to deal with in his/her life. Each student that drops out either loses interest in their education or has too much stress on their hands to balance school and other problems that they are facing. In order to better our society, the most useful career a young person could choose would be Education.

After getting a high school diploma, the best thing a person can do is go to college. For a young person, the best major to choose to help them in the future is education. Choosing education as a major would help our society by educating students on a subject that they have never been introduced to before such as math, English, reading, math, and social studies. A young person has the choice to become either an elementary, middle, or high school teacher. An elementary teacher educates students in their basic skills such as math, reading, science, and social studies which paves the road for a student's future. The duties of a middle school teacher are to further the learning of the basic studies for a better understanding of a subject. Being a high school teacher means that you are responsible for helping a student get to the point of graduation. Their duty is to make sure that all of their students reach that point and to not let them drop out of school.

An education is looked upon as a discipline. It shows how self-disciplined one is by going to school and making it to graduation. School is one of the best places to learn how to be independent and dependent at the same time. A student learns to be independent by learning how to believe in themselves by doing their homework and showing up to school to learn. Students learn how to go on with their day in school on their own by not having their parents around. Not only does a student become independent but also dependent. A student becomes dependent on their teachers.

Choosing education as a major would not only help the students in the school but it would also help themselves in becoming more efficient in a subject. Becoming an educator not only allows someone to help other people but to inspire them also. They could help inspire and motivate students into furthering their education and showing them how having a high education such as a degree in a certain subject that they enjoy could get them far in life. Having an education is one of the most valuable things that one person could have and by majoring in education would not only affect them but also their community.

Tips for Funding a College Education

If you are a parent wondering how you will pay for college and eventually retire, you are not alone. The College Board lists the average cost of a public university as $12,800 for in state tuition, room and board. Add another $6,400 for out of state tuition. Private universities average $26,700. Multiply by four years and by the number of children and you have a reason to be concerned. You need to learn the rules of college funding and the sources of the funds.

The financial aid process varies by school and some are interested in the contribution to be provided by grandparents. As a grandparent my first question to the college is, "How does your endowment fund compare to my retirement fund?"

If the financial aid process determines that you are "wealthy" or the family contribution falls into the "you've got to be kidding me" or some similar category, there is a ray of hope. The college brochure price is a "sticker price." Tuition discounts are offered but they require research.

There are funding sources from public and private colleges that are not restricted based on financial needs. Public schools have the ability to offer in state tuition for students who meet specific requirements and private universities have endowment funds which are often allocated on a first come, first served basis.

The preferential packages are often reserved for those who are the top 25% of the applicants. Find the schools where your child is in the top 25% of the applicants and let your children know that it is competitive world out there. My older daughter qualified for a discount at an out of state public university. She was in the top 25% of the applicants, gave the university additional geographic diversity and she majored in a field dominated by men. The cost savings and the heartache of being so far from home were substantial. The discounts are out there but they have to be researched and your child is the one who has to make the final decision.

Loan programs are also available to both student and parents. Parents, be advised that you can borrow to help with educational funding but you cannot borrow to fund retirement. Children can borrow to help pay for their future but keep in mind that graduates with massive debt often return to the nest.

Private scholarships are available. The best approach is to research past winners. You can find who won the scholarship and contact them. Finding people in the digital-age is incredibly easy. It does require work as in work-study. Work-study programs are another source of funding but that can interfere with party-time. If you are concerned about party-time, read Larry Winget's book, "It's Called Work for a Reason." and share it with the college bound student. If they can't follow Larry's philosophy, they aren't going to make it. Rather than falling in love with a single college or university you want to find various schools that meet the student's needs in terms academic programs, student population and location. Imagine falling in love with a specific automobile and telling the sales manager you have to have it. That is not the best negotiating position.

Learn about the process. Visit Octameron.Com. The company was started years ago when a retired Army officer was faced with tuition bills and no understanding of the financial aid system. Einstein said it the best, "If we knew what we were doing, it wouldn't be called research." Take the time to do the research and get a copy of "Financial Aid Officers - What They Do To You and For You." It is inexpensive and can be found through Octameron's website. You will be glad you did.

Top 5 Songs About Education

The theme of the school was an important issue for the pop songs of Chuck Berry Goose-stepped his way through School Days (Ring Ring Goes The Bell) in 1957. However, it seems that the seventies was a golden age of some school songs, even though no such thing as a loophole for fans of pop music a lot. What makes these songs so memorable? And what a lack of quality education odes today say about education in the noughties?

5: Rock 'n' High School - Ramones. "I do not careIn the story 'cos that's not where I want to be! "Although often than a traditional Ramones, the number 1979 soundtrack of the same name as proud as a heartbeat Sing-Along at a time when the group spent a long time for new pop direction, and finally have some recognition chart. It is curious that At no time during my training for life outside the university, I have seen, never on a cruise of students for a GTO.

4: When I Kissed the Teacher --ABBA. "I bow before me and tried to explain the laws of geometry, and I could not stop myself, I had to kiss the teacher!" This movement back, and certainly not worthy of PC-representation of teacher reports of students is the opening round of the Swedish quartet's fourth album, Arrival. Apart from the story by playing the videotape, the disturbing aspect of this song is the answer of the teacher with Agnetha's. In short, he wants to.

3: Baggy Trousers - Madness. "Everything I was taught in schoolHow to bend not break the rules. "Yes, I know that this song is from 1980, but no matter. How can you ignore this blatant celebration of school vandalism and pranks nostalgic. Whatever happens, get the tube? And to be honest, once again, you probably have received one ASBO for pulling someone's hair stand on end today. Make me young.

2: Another Brick In The Wall - Pink Floyd. "We need no education We do not need mind control." Everything seems a bit "sad and serious at the time that FloydGet involved. Waters also melody and accompanying film and animation into a sort of prog-anthem for young offenders. The innocent love, which we are accustomed, is replaced by a choir strangely disturbing - and suddenly there is a reason for rejecting the need for training on the juvenile "Heroes do so.

1: School's Out - Alice Cooper. "Well, nothing, no class, and we do not even started and we had no intelligence, we can not a word that rhymes." Herepost po 'modern Declaration of Acceptance of the lack of rhyming ability Cooper's. But he does not do it! It's just something eternally visceral sensation of leaving the school back and it is a piece to start, it's also funny, which was 24 years and four albums into his career when the song has been released!

I know that there are numerous other items from that period. But how many names over the last ten years? Is not much I know. Why? Now it seems that in this age groupThe home-schooling and a greater variety of school, it is less easy to complain today. For the sake of pop music, which might be a sin.
